Lasting Power of Attorney Applications Continue to Rise.

  1. The number of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) applications received by the Office of the Publice Guardian has been increasing since their introduction in 2007.
  2. In fact, thay have received in excess of 395,000 applications in the first half of this year alone. That’s more than 15,000 per week, and an increase of 12.4% on the same period last year.

Why are the numbers increasing?

To understand why the number of LPA applications has been increasing the first thing we need to look at is what an LPA is.

In simple terms an LPA is a legally binding document that allows you to appoint people you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity.

With this in mind we can now look at one of the main reasons people apply for LPA’s, and therefore explain why the numbers continue to rise.

So, a signinfiant number of people apply for an LPA because they are worried that they may suffer from some form of dementia or memory loss in the future, and they want to make sure that their loved ones do not have to endure any additional stress or financial hardship at what will already be a difficult time.

According to Alzheimer’s Society:

“There are around 900,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1.6 million by 2040.”

With the number of people suffering from dementia in the UK at 900,000 already, and set to rise to over 1.6 million by 2040, it’s easy to see why more and more people are applying for an LPA.
